Bell of Firmament in Dalestra

Dalestra has been blogged in LnL's blog before and for a good reason. It's a very interesting sim that offers a lot of options for you to explore. This time, we are showing you The Bell of Firmament. If you arrive at the default Landing Point in Delestra, walk outside and look for the blue beam to teleport to the Bell of Firmament.

Or you can use this --> SLURL to go directly to the location. The Bell of Firmament is a device that renders constelations in 3D; it is capable of scaling, filtering and drawing connections between stars. It is a fantastic way to explore how the zodiacs could look like in space and to discover many of the others constellations. Its visuals are absolutely fantastic! London at the UWA exhibit with his Perfume!

London is featured once again at the UWA (The University of Western Australia) exhibition. This time the theme was "Perfume". London created the impressive installation (photo above) which is best viewed at midnight. This piece can be enjoyed both by looking at the ensemble and by paying close attention to its details. Impromptu Party at LnL!

Fun, fun, fun! London decided to throw a party and we got to work! Everyone gathered in the LnL Ballroom for the first party in the new sim! The DJ, our own London of course, did an amazing job streaming a few oldies and a fair amount of in songs as well.

It was a great time spent in great company! And we are considering making it a regular event! What do you think? :)

Not everything is Black and White!!

After being the UWA's 7th award winner last year with the piece Zebras, artist Fuschia Nightfire was invited to make a full sim installation. She had to come up with an idea that would fill all that space and found a piece called "Not everything is plain B&W" which led to the thought of taking things further along that line. Searching in her inventory she found out there were other pieces sharing the same black and white or shades of gray look and although they were not connected in any other way, she thought it would be interesting to put together a show of all of them.

The show is composed by a series of installations all in black and white and shades of grey, where the viewer travels around of the surreal, dreamlike creation. It is even possible to blend in the piece fully by grabbing and wearing the skins and clothing found for free at the landing point. The show is very involving and it is recommended to just take some time, let everything rez, and jump in the hole in the floor in the landing area to explore. There is a clear path to follow but it is nice to stray outside of it and find interesting features you may miss if you don't.

This is a very beautiful creation, I recommended you to see with friends or just by yourself. It was elected to be in SL's destination guide editor's picks even before the project was opened to the public. As Fuschia said to LNL, "I feel like this is the absolute highlight of my SL art", and we believe it is definitively a must see and truly a highlight in our Second Life!! S in Prims by Suzanne Graves at UWA exhibit

Sometimes Second Life catches you by surprise, even after all these years. This time, it happened in the shape of a self-portrait. I am not a big fan of self-portraits. For some reason, people tend to either go too abstract or too realistic. And, let's face it, in Second Life it is even easier to fall onto either end. When London teleported me to the UWA sim to check the installations of the current exhibition, I was far from imagining what I would see; "S in Prims" by Suzanne Graves. 145 prims of magical and captivating grace, transformed again and again by discreet movement, bold colors, and the eye of a mesmerised watcher. When you stand in front of this self-portrait, you understand. It's right there. No explantions needed. No doubts, no interpretations. Beauty in it's most uncomplicated and simultaneously intricate form. Exceptional. Enjoy and do drop by UWA to vote for this piece.

London at the LEA FULL SIM ART SERIES!

We have great news! London, the co-owner of LnL Square, has been selected to take part in the LEA Full Sim Art Series! He was atributed the month of November with "Project Guernica"! Congrats! The LEA Full Sim Art Series started in October 2011 and will run till the end of 2012. The resources are extremely interesting; a full sim including media and up to 15.000 prims, plus all the creativity the artists have!

Rezdays are always special. They celebrate the beginning of an amazing experience, renewed every day by unexpected discoveries, new friends and magical moments. Both London and I, after four years in Second Life, still find new ways of being captivated by this astounding virtual world. This past January 23 and 24 were mine and London's rezdays respectively! We started off having different views and experiences in Second Life; then we moved on with a common project, LnL Square, that has been quite an unbelievable journey, from a group to gather friends first, to a store next and a huge area to enjoy with several locations and varied activities now. We have so many friends who throughout time walked this journey with us. Some have drifted away back into RL. Others are still inworld with us after all these years. New friends have joined us as well. To all, we owe the joy of having made our SL a much more interesting life! Thank you!

Year of The Dragon Hunt Prize!

Our dear friend Muse is moderating a new event called Quote Chat at Tripician Center. Each month, there is a theme; this month's is "light". Each week, a quote will be put forward to help trigger the discussion. Yesterday's quote was “There are no paths to enlightenment; only journeys from it”. It was a very lively and interesting discussion with the moderator doing a fantastic job by making everyone feel welcome and pushing the limits of the topic further in a very attentive way. Everyone was encouraged to share thoughts, ideas, feelings even. Do drop by! It takes place every Tuesday at 1.30 pm SLT hosted by Muse Starsmith. A perfect time for people on both sides of the big pond! :)

The Delestra Quest!

Taking a bit of a break from all the work we have done lately, moving the whole store and creating all the different environments for you to enjoy, London and I decided to take a look at the Destination Guide and find something interesting and different to do. We stumbled upon a game called the Delestra Quest. It is said that Delestra is a sim with a secret. The aim of the game is to find this secret by exploring the floating dockyard, the gothic castle, the temple, the Oriental village and the labyrinth, finding as many clues as possible. Talk to anyone you come across!

"Welcome stranger. If you are ready for the Delestra Quest touch me for a HUD and other information...please come close so I can see you!!" says the Demon merchant. As you are about to start the game, talk to him and grab all the information you can. Beware, he will try to sell you a few items, but you will most likely find them at a cheaper price elsewhere!

One of the clues you receive at the beginning says: "You have found yourself in a dockyard used for ship repairs, restocking of supplies and recreation. Delestra is famed for its dark sky and it can be an intimidating place full of strange cultures and places.

There are many legends of old times including stories of pilgrims, Enscharys elves, and unicorns but also demons and dark forces."

This is a fun game, that will probably take more than one session to finish. It is very interactive even taking you outside of Second Life to check for clues!

And at the end you receive a prize composed of several prizes! We won't reveal what so we don't spoil the surprise! ;)

A few tips:
* Be careful, the sim has a lot of objects around that are for sale. When you click something for a clue, do it intentionally and paying A LOT of attention!
* Walk around and get close to things; the clues are triggered by proximity. You'll hear a sound and the clue will appear both in local chat and on your screen.
* Every now and then, unwear and wear the HUD to update it.
* Check if the item indicated as having been loaded in your HUD is there. If not, repeat the step and it will appear without any further issue.
* Save a few LMs of key locations! Just a thought! ;)

This game is very well organised and rich in detail. It's a lot of fun to do by yourself or with a friend. Great job! To play the Delestra Quest, click --> here! Have fun!

The Path, an exhibition to visit!

London and I have visited a very interesting project called The Path. In cooperation with the Lindens Endowment for the Arts (LEA), Bryn Oh gathered eight of Second Life's (SL) artists and gave them quite an interesting challenge. The theme was the corpse concept often used by the Surrealists.
On a pre-established sequence, the first artist composed a start to the story and passed it on to the next artist who did the same passing it forward. The Path begins in a dark room where you find some introductory information about the exhibit. Click the jar (above) to receive a folder with a landmark and a notecard. The key to moving forward from scene to scene is the head of the inventor. We took a few photos (click to enlarge them) to bring you just a small taste of the unexpected you will come across. This narrator will be silent till the end of the post, so you can enjoy the photos with no interference.

Discussions: Of Alts and New Year's!

In the past two Thursdays, despite the holiday season, LnL has gathered its dicussion crew and did something we do so well... discussed! It was a lot of fun, as always!

The first Thursday, it was all about alts. Why have an alt? To test permissions in creations, to explore different aspects of ourselves, to be able to work without interruptions, to play HUD games, to create traffic (as questionable as this could be, in the opionion of some), for Roleplaying, to backup things, to be vaults for money, or even to hide from someone or spy on someone. Oh, and let's not forget griefing! Some alts are nothing but empty beings, but others gain a life of their own and could actually become more important than the primary avatar. The group agreed, that regardless of the characteristic of the alt, it must be very stressful to manage in proficient manner multiple alts! Whichever the case may be, SL is a fascinating world with multiple and enriching experiences, and alts are a part of that!

This Thursday, LnL met to make a sort of a balance of 2011 in SL. The group talked about the new viewers, mesh, physics (which caused a lot of laughter when the discussion went to things like flapping and bouncing, and I will say no more!), joining the teen and the adult grid, modifications in the Dashboard, and some of the unresolved problems such as lag, sim crossing issues, group chat/conference borking, and the creation of SL Realms. Everyone agreed that, as interesting as covering new grounds is, old problems should be fixed first. The 2012 wishlist included no lag (wishful thinking, yes, we know...!) or a more user-friendly viewer, among other personal plans such as learning mesh and enlarging business ventures. As London said: "Whatever the New Year brings us, there's a bright future ahead, new experiences, new friends, new beautiful moments. This past year was full of them too, and the only thing we can say here at LNL is thanks to all of you for being so wonderful. It was a joy to share these moments with you guys!! We wish you a very happy 2012 and hope to see you around many times!! Thank you for your participation, you have been awesome!! :) ".

Of Culture in SL!

Last Thursday, LnL hosted its weekly discussion. London was the moderator and the topic chosen "Where did Culture go?". In the group's opinion, there seems to be an imbalance between those who look for culture events in SL and those who would rather choose something like shopping, dancing, building, etc. Culture options seem to be varied and plenty; concerts, art exhibits, readings, discussions, libraries, museums, theater, ballet (despite the technical limitations of SL which cause huge problems to this type of presentation), even clothing styles and Roleplaying. The main problem related to culture in SL is that it does cost a considerable amount of money to set up/maintain a cultural event/sim and without Linden Labs financial support (something everyone agreed to be vital) it becomes very difficult to finance culture in the long run. One of the aspects the group focused on were the inworld classes. Some of the "old-timers" thought the number of classes offered in Events decreased and no new topics were added. Some of the newest members to SL defended that even old topics are needed for new residents and that the issue was the lack of time to go to all the classes! An interesting point raised by the group was whether cultural events have less advertising options (and less visibility due to the new Maturity Rating criteria in the dashboard), resulting in a smaller number of people attending them. One solution offered was to centralize cultural events and have them available 24/7 so that all timezones could benefit from their existence. Food for thought! There is so much to explore in LnL! Today we will guide you through a few of the darker corners. When you land at LnL's main Landing Point, click the Teleport System (shieldlike prim with the LnL logotype) and choose Cemetery.

This earie place, covered in mist, has a scary guardian armed with a scythe. Beware not to get... scythed! To the left and to the right of the Cemetery, you can find two downward staircases, that will take you to the Gothic labyrinthic tunnels.

You can also access the tunnels and Gothic rooms by entering the Mausoleum!

Now, here is a challenge! Left, right, right or left?? Try to find the Piano Corner (pic above) where you can become a master pianist in an instant (hehe!) and the dangerously looking Dungeon (pic below). It seems it has been... visited... before with tragic results...!

To end the tour today, try to find the Observatorium (pic below). It's a round-shaped varanda, where you can sit and look at the amazing sea view. Enjoy its calmness! The tea is already brewing! :)

On one side, the Lenormand Castle. This is one of two Gothic castles that look like private property with their front doors closed... but these are public spaces. The Lenormand Castle has, as the name indicates, a room with a Lenormand deck for you to enjoy and perhaps even take a glimpse at the future! ;)

On the other side, there is the Sleeping Warrior Castle, also public and with a cosy room for nice get-togethers by the fireplace. :) Both castles link to the store underneath.

Another fundamental element is the Discussion area, where LnL holds discussions amongst a friendly group of people. Old and new friends join us every week for a new topic! These discussions are open to the whole grid. Above the Discussion Area, there is the Tower, also accessible by clicking the Teleport System or simply by doing the magic SL flying! The Tower has an amazing view over the whole complex and it is quite a fun place to sit down while others try to figure out why they spot you on the mini-map but can't see you anywhere! ;)

Finally the pièce de résistance, the Cathedral. This building was created to represent LnL in the SL8B (Second Life 8th Birthday) and has now found its rightful place in Mare Serenitatis. You can sit inside and enjoy the quietness while you IM friends or sort through your inventory!

Today, LnL introduces you to the Studio, a wonderful place where you can sit and enjoy a quiet fireside chat with friends or someone special. This room is in a way the heart of the Gothic Labyrinth and the Caves area. There is a door to the left and a door to the right!

Let's see if you find the Map Room (above)! Left or right? From one of the exits in the Studio, and a bit of walking (beware of any lost souls lurking in the dark!), you'll get to this room that, look closely, is one of the multiple entrances to the Caves! Explore about and have fun! :)

Featuring LnL: Ballroom and Chapel!

Today, the featured locations are the Ballroom (above) and the Chapel (below). The Ballroom has a direct TP to it when you click the Teleport System (round shiledlike prim with the LnL logo on it) and opens a lot of opportunities for parties. It's a large space with danceballs and a DJ booth! There is plenty of room to dance and have fun! Oh, and don't worry about the dragon. He's ok! ;)

The Chapel is a small area especially prepared for smaller groups, for readings, conferences or any type of meetings. It's a large enough space to be able to sit several avatars and small enough to provide a certain privacy as well!

Of a discussion at LnL, profiles and a pinch of salt!

Last Thursday, the discussion took place at the new LnL location - Mare Serenitatis! The topic at hand was "Profiles, passport of our identity!". The group started by sharing how important their own profiles were. For some a profile was a means of sharing a bit of information about themselves (although most would not add too much personal RL info nor personal photos). Others completed it once and never really felt the need to update it. On the other hand, those present thought that others' profiles are quite interesting as they give us a bit of a sneak peek into the person behind the avatar. Now, what to put in the profile? There's a difficult decision! Some of the discussers update their photos quite often (and that made everyone agree that they probably in the list of Linden Lab's most loved texture uploaders!), others stick to the first pic or simply update when there is a significant change in their looks. Another classic of profiles are quotes, which some find a bit exaggerated, as well as the threats to our SL integrity (talk about exaggeration)! Some profiles are left totally empty. Why? An alt, maybe (although some alts have very complete profiles, showing different sides of that resident). Or perhaps the person is new to SL and doesn't quite know what to do with it. A suggestion was made to add a voice sample to the profile! Interesting! However, perhaps it would not work properly with profiles of RP avatars, and then again! Online profiles weren't that much of a success amongst the discussers, being too similar to existing social networks... And time was up! To conclude, profiles are a fun wayof getting to know someone or they are a source of aggravation! Whichever the case, always take them with a pinch of salt! ;) Join us next week!

New and old residents know how convenient it is to have a place to open a box or adjust a prim on the spur of the moment. But where?? In most stores you simply cannot drop the box on the floor and you have no posestands. Sooo, LnL has decided to create a Rezz Area open to all, plus posestand and a sit-down area for any company you might bring to rest a bit while you are busy! If you look carefully, there is an arrow in the pic. You will find those arrows around the store; they are your taxi to the Rezz Area. Just click on the arrow and "Teleport". To get back to the store, same process! You can also use the Teleport System (round shieldlike prim with the LnL logo) to choose other locations like the Romantic Garden or the Caves! There is plenty to explore!

London and I are happy to announce that the new LnL Store is officially open! London did an extraordinary job building the whole setup for days and days! It looks awesome! The Main Collection and the Gothic Collection are in the main building (on the photo, 1st and 2nd floors) as well as the Tshirt Collection (2nd floor). On the left and right side of the photo, outside, you can see two buildings. This is where the Kimono Collection is! Above and below the store there are a lot of areas you can explore! Above you have the LnL Lounge where we hold our weekly discussions, plus two Gothic Castles and a Cathedral. All areas are public! Below the store you can have fun exploring, and getting lost *evil grin*, in the Gothic Labyrinth of rooms and corridors, lounge areas and secret areas. Also, further down below, you have the Grottos, a fantastic maze of twists and turns with magical corners where you can sit to have a quiet chat with a special one! At ground level (use the teleport system for an easier access), there is the Garden! Yesterday's discussion at LnL's Lounge was a lot of fun! A small group gathered on Thanksgiving day to talk about the value of money in SL. Money is power. Buyers and sellers relate to each other through money, it can buy us clothes but not beauty, it can buy us luxuries but not happiness. London, the moderator, kick-started the discussion by asking whether SL would be more interesting without its currency. There was a common thought, money makes things fascinating in Second Life, it adds to realism, to the excitement of purchasing things. If there were no money, there wouldn't be any commerce. But what do we really need money for? There are so many freebies. The truth is that money puts the market into gear creating opportunities. These sometimes shape excessive consumerism though... The group then went on to talking about the differences between putting money into SL (Premium accounts) and not doing so (Basic accounts); although Basic accounts allow for quite a comfortable living in SL, Premium ones offer other possibilities. Now, with all this talk about money, it was inevitable to mention the best ways to make money in this virtual world! Buying, selling or renting land, being a musician, a model, a teacher, a counsellor. There are many options, however nowadays it seems to be a lot more difficult to make money than in the past. To end the discussion, London asked what we would do if we had all the Linden dollars in the world! Some said they would give it away in tips or to charities, others said they would buy a whole set of sims! All great plans! :) Time was up! To conclude, money controls many people; the more they have the greedier they get, the less they have, the more they want. The real wealth though is freedom, friendship, health, love. Yesterday, at LnL's Lounge, the weekly discussion took place with a very interesting (as always I must add!) group of attendees. The topic promised to be interesting -- Hey, how do I look?! -- about the way people choose to portrait themselves showing a lot about who we are in Real Life (RL) and expect from SL. The group, under London's lively moderation, started by talking about what determines the way we choose to look in SL. For some it is how they wish they looked in RL, for others the need to express creativity, the places they go to, what they want to do. Just having the possibility to try out change, in all its possible variations, is one of the most captivating features of SL. It was interesting to see that many of the discussers don't feel the need to change all the time, being rather comfortable in one look, while others felt the need to be true shapeshifters, showing different sides of themselves and, in a way, promoting the notion that there is beauty in all types of "looks". The way each resident looks in SL strongly determines their SL experience as it reflects who you are influencing others' reactions towards you. To conclude, "looks" are important, both in SL and in RL. The way we "play" with the possibilities SL puts at our disposal opens the door to fun, entertainment and a bit of reality mixed in it! ;) Join us next week in LnL's Lounge, Thursday at 2pm SLT for a new discussion topic!

"Me. Myself, my avie and I!" was last Thursday's topic at LnL's discussion. For many people, Second Life creates an alternative reality, but is that reality creating a false sense of fulfilment and accomplishment? Are we becoming our avatar, reducing our life to a set of irreal experiences and choosing a dreamlike world over our RL world? Are we real or are we avies? It is true that Second Life could, for some, create a false sense of "reality" and even accomplishment, but it is also a fact that many of SL's residents learn very real new skills through this virtual world, things like interaction, communication, empathy, or simply how to use image manipulation sofwares. After discussing what the concept of "reality", which proved to be extremely complex, a few discussers debated the notion that by being/staying in SL, people got a somewhat irreal notion of who/what they were; some defended that SL is as much a reality as any aspect of RL. Some researchers defend that a large amount of people who access virtual platforms tend to suffer from depression and isolation, yet many of those present felt that that is an image the Media has created; the amount of people who have those conditions is proportional to the same group of people in RL. There is a fine line between avie and RL person. Some try to separate them as much as possible, others get so immersed in who/what their avies are, the way they look, etc. that that overflows into RL. The avatar becomes, in a way, one of many masks (not in a negative way) we wear daily, one possible "face". Our time was up so London concluded the discussion stating that "Second Life can be very attractive, and we can spend a lot of hours enjoying it, but we must never forget that in order to play the game, we first have to be alive, so let's have balance, enjoy both worlds and be as happy as we can be. Last Thursday's discussion sure had a hot topic! Is Second Life just a game? London, the moderator, kick started the "hostilities" by asking what kind of information we had about SL before we created an account. Some had no information at all, some thought it was a game with levels. What brought most to SL was curiosity, boredom or the need to try something new and different. Most mentioned the important influence of either a mentor or a friendly resident who helped overcome the steep learning curve. Then the group moved on to discussing whether SL was "just a game"! Goals, levels, score, a beginning and an end, all these concepts are part of the definition of game for many. Yet, SL doesn't necessarily have those, so the group did not reach a consensus in considering SL a game. Another interesting topic debated was the fact that some people strongly separate RL and SL. However some discussers were of the opinion that that is extremely difficult because there will always be a part of our "self" present in the way we experience SL. Relationships or SL becoming a source of RL income contribute to residents not considering Second Life a game at all. It was a fun and diverse discussion, but it was time to conclude. Regardless of the way we enjoy SL, or the fact that we consider it a game or not, important is to experience SL's rich range of possibilities and share it with your friends! A Treat and Trick discussion last week!

Trick or Treat! Seasons in SL! That was the topic of last Thursday's discussion. It was a fun and relaxed time with a fantastic group of people and lots of laughs! The group started by sharing some of the "treats" of SL in the form of places we could enjoy, such as The Library of Alexandria, the Inspire Space Park, Tempura, the Gardens of Apollo, The Wastelands or the DaVinci Gardens, some of which already disappeared, unfortunately. These places shared the uniqueness of offering us the best of SL. To add to the places, the group moved on to share some of the best moments they experienced in SL, such as meeting and talking to people at discussions like these *wink wink* , going to concerts and exhibits, building, exploring, sailing, hunting, and learning new things (some mentioned cybersex, but that doesn't count! Aham...! lol). Some of the "tricks" (not so nice aspects of SL), in the opinion of the group, were the fact that SL is so ephemeral, fantastic places disappear, wonderful people stop coming inworld, and of course the usual array of nutheads, a.k.a., griefers who tend to contribute to a bit of stress in SL. As the discussion came close to its end, the moderator guided the group to talk a bit about seasons (festivities, fashion, etc.) in SL. Most discussers enjoyed the sense of having seasons (and weather) in SL, despite the fact that in some cases these are used as an excuse for commercial purposes. Dressing up for a specific season, and Halloween is big in SL, didn't seem like a redundancy to those present; they found it to be very interesting and amusing even, being creativity a keypoint in SL! To conclude, SL has very interesting aspects and at the same time there are things we don't like but all in all it is a wonderful platform worth searching, providing fantastic experiences, friendships and fun. LNL won UWA challenge thanks to Gfresh Botha!!

LnL participated in the latest edition of the UWA (University of Western Australia) 3D Open Art October Challenge with two pieces inspired by two of our favorite artists, Canadian Claude Theberge and Spanish Francisco de Goya!! The two pieces, made from original SL prims named in remembrance of their talents, "Waiting for Theberge" and "Mourning Goya" were very strong in the voting for the People's Choice Award. We want to thank all of you that went and voted for us!!

The competition was huge, 99 pieces and participants of over 40 nations of 6 of the 7 continents around the planet gathered for this challenge. But what gave us the Big Price, was a very big surprise!! The winner of the Workhouse & Art place d-oo-b Prize, Gfresh Botha, with his fantastic piece I GOT 99 PROBLEMS AND THE RICH AIN'T ONE, decided to share his prize with us O.O!!"I'm no artist and have no idea about art. In RL I have never really taken an interest in art, other than my namesake Leon Botha, who died earlier this year. I have always been a little creative though and SL has given me a medium in which to express this. I make stuff and I enjoy it, if others like it then it's a bonus. I don't know much about art but I know crap when I see it. For the longest time in SL I was in search of "art" galleries/sims/exhibitions in SL, all of which seemed somewhat disappointing, made up mostly of uninspired twisty prims and textures. Then one day I found UWA and my cravings were fulfilled, a rich and thriving art environment full of what I consider the best examples of art and it's in SL. I've been coming back ever since and I'm always pleasantly surprised by the volume and variety of new creations. I would like to give half (of my prize) to my own favourite piece by London Junkers called "Waiting for Theberge". I really really liked it. The rest of the prize I will divide between my friends in SL who have more use for it than me. A big thank you to everyone who liked my work, and thanks to UWA." Gfresh Botha.

Last Thursday "The Future of SL" was discussed!

Last Thursday, LnL gathered to discuss the future of Second Life (SL). In the opinion of those present, SL will continue to exist as long as there are paying members and Linden Lab (LL) servers working. This seems simple to state, yet the group was also aware that there are several issues like lack of support by LL or little improvement in SL, causing discontent and an apparent drop in activity and number of residents. Some of the discussers tried alternative Virtual Worlds (VWs) but none resembled SL both in technical and in content creation terms. Mesh, the latest SL craze, seemed to be quite a controversial topic. Some thought the existance of mesh in SL was long overdue while others defended that while other more urgent problems are not solved, mesh shouldn't have been added. Age validation, a rather complex process especially for those living outside of the United States, and no gaming allowed could be perceived as factors contributing to residents losing interest in SL. SL is the biggest metaverse around due to momentum, free membership, being more developed technically, content development being easily available, among other factors. The group suggested a few improvements for the future, such as hipergridding between SL and other worlds or simply fixing what is wrong now! To conclude this discussion, London stated that nothing "lasts forever, Linden Lab created Second Life and a lot of companies have seen the advantages of such a creation, some have opened and closed overnight, some are still struggling to copy the model, but what is undoubtful is that LL's "baby" is and has been setting strong blocks for future virtual worlds. We are witnessing the future by participating in it, and what ever comes ahead, we can say Second Life Is, has been and will be a wonderful adventure. The Cathedral is finally at home!!

Great news for LNL, the cathedral made for the SL8B is finally rezzed in the LNL land!! 228 prims of solid construction had to be adapted to the already existing building, and at the same time the observatory had to be re located. After some hours of planning and some others of building, now the place is ready to be enjoyed, and it is fully interconnected to the old store!! There is even a brand new garden where to sit down and enjoy the songs of a new resident, Mr. Owl!! Come check it out and bring some friends, relax and have a nice chat, we hope you like it!! Dear Mr. Linden Where are you?

Last Thursday at LnL, a group of discussers gathered to talk about Linden Lab's approach to SL. London, the moderator, introduced the topic: "Lindens are like an urban legend, everyone has heard of them but lots haven't even seen them. AR's are sent on a daily bases but only a few of them go through, copybotting is still a concern for many creators, lag is our daily companion and crashes are just around the corner. Do you think Lindens have abandoned us, or are they just up there playing their own "game" while we create their content and give them our money? Should they be more friendly? What would you ask a Linden if you had the chance to talk to them?" The floor was then open to all and the first question was what the group thought about the Lindens. Those who had actually met a Linden didn't have a positive opinion about them. They seem to give an impression of aloofness. The group thinks this could be due to the fact that LL is understaffed, causing lack of time to be in the grid, or the philosophy of the company, building the infrastructure and leaving the creation of content in the hand of residents thus promoting a strong diversity. The group was very vocal about the need for the Lindens to be more present in SL to facilitate the identification of the real problems residents face. Third party viewers are an interesting alternative to the offical LL viewer, some have interesting features and their usability is higher, yet they are overlooked by LL. To the question "Does the lack of assistance by LL open the doors to copybot, crime, laundering money, extorsion, highjacking accounts, etc etc etc? Or is this too exagerated?" the group agreed that it did potentiate dubious situations, some of which end up causing serious damage to many residents. One of the topics adressed as well was the fact that the Lindens seem to benefit a few "elite" residents by having them in the picks of their official Linden avies. As the discussion drew to an end, a wishlist was drafted just in case we met a Linden! ;) Less lag, fix existing problems and only then add new features, don't try to turn SL into Facebook, review the rules for posting Events in Search, shut down the grid with forewarning for proper maintenace of the system, stop capped IMs/notices and be a part of inworld activities. As a conclusion, London stated: "Reachable leaders have proven in history to be able to change the world, a little more of attention by the Lindens would certainly make a difference. They may have their reasons, but listening to us would help them make SL a better place, perhaps we need to give the first step so let's go find a Linden, and when we find them...let's give them a hug!". Thursday Oct 6, LnL hosted its weekly discussion. The topic was "HELP!! I've fallen and I can't get OUT!! Is SL an addiction?!!". Most replied YES! while some defended that it can become addictive but not necessarily, depending on the personality type. Things like meeting new friends, exploring, creating, becoming who and what ever you wish to be, and yes, organising inventories, that dreaded activity, are some of the aspects that contribute to the many hours residents spend inworld. Some of the consequences of SL being addictive include neglecting the household (although some thought that didn't count!), the family, losing a job, and in a broader sense Real Life. Things are not as simple as this though. Often SL becomes one's RL, for instance in situations of disability or health issues. Can one really draw the line between SL and RL then? The level of immersion is often deliberate and not really an addiction. A bit on the side of the topic at hand, the group discussed SL and how it is portrayed by the media, usually in a negative and incomplete way. As to the time spent inworld, many felt a bit "guilty" about the long hours spent in SL (as a result of judgemental comments by people who are not in SL and who don't know nor understand it?) although others felt they conciliate SL and RL perfectly! The moderator asked the group if we had ever taken a vacation from SL and the answers were quite diverse! Some did without a problem, others "tried" their best not to! Don't we all...!! As a factor contributing to the amount of time spent in SL, an interesting aspect discussed was the fact that many know people who met in SL and ended up establishing a relationship in SL and/or in RL. Related to this, the group moved on to aspects such as giving out personal information or not, the dangers of SL dating, while some specific cases were shared. The discussion ended with a fun question, what were the funniest things you had done in RL that you usually did in SL, for example trying to rotate a static picture? Well, beware, this might be shocking! Some count prims in stores, others mentally try to figure out how many prims were used to build an object, others look at trees and wonder where the amazing textures came from, in RL, yes! This writer is guilty as well...! To conclude, the moderator stated that anything can become an addiction. It is up to us to make the best of all things! For that reason, grab a refreshing drink, enjoy the sunset, call a friend, and when the concert is on, log in and start virtual dancing or sim hopping! Thursday was discussion day at LnL! The topic for this week's event was "SHHHHHHH!! I'm huntin' wabbits!! Sane "Game" or abrupt obsession in SL?!!". The group started by defining what a hunt was. All agreed it was a fun way of promoting sales and of finding new stores and the right products to buy, not to mention meeting new friends. Despite the fact that nowadays one can dress up an avatar simplywith hunt prizes and get a good look that way, it was interesting to see that many discussers thought the "freebie-factor" was a secondary issue. Despite the fact that many new residents have no idea about hunts (some suggested it would be a relevant information to add to SL tutorials), hunts could be a interesting activity, though frustrating at times. Many of the group members refuse to do hunts where a fee is charged per prize, unless it is for donation purposes. On the other hand, it was defended that the symbolic fee could serve as an incentive to boost quality amongst the participant stores. Hunting in SL can easily go from being a game to becoming a compulsion; some of the participants (well, the majority... but shhhhh!!!) said they have a lot of unopened boxes from previous hunts! Now, one aspect a lot of the participants agreed upon was the fact that there is an overflow of hunts especially during certain times of the year when celebrations are held; there are so many different hunts, grid-wide hunts, store hunts, mini hunts, with so many diferent themes, that it is often difficult to decide which one to select. The group then went on to discuss aspects they find annoying in hunts, such as store owners making it too difficult to find the prizes, too many decoys (this writer adds, extreme resizing and recolouring of the prize ...), or when it's a pay hunt having no pictures available so the hunter can decide whether to get the prize or not. On the topic of cheating, all agreed that it does defeat the purpose of a hunt but when it gets frustrating and after several failed attempts to find the prize, then...! Curiously enough, not many thought that the proliferation of hunts could be one of the causes for less sales in SL, because where there is quality, there will be sales regardless of any hunts, freebies, Midnight Mania boards or other types of gift givers. In relation to the quality of the prizes, the group agreed that hunt organisers would definitely benefit from being more selective regarding the stores they approve for their hunts, and that they should also do a follow-up on the prizes to check if they match the quality of the items sold in the store. Time was up so quickly! So, as a conclusion, the moderator stated that "Consumerism in SL is certainly a tricky question, it serves the purpose of showing who and what we are, or the expectations and ways of living that we have. But at the end, whatever makes us virtually happy is what counts, never forgeting that this metaverse is just a "Game" made for us to enjoy and be happy. So get the nets out, wear comfy shoes and LET'S GO HUNTING, we might find something pweety cool!!". Thank you everyone for a fun discussion! Last Thursday, LnL hosted its weekly discussion. This time the topic was "Get out of my Lawn!! Hate, Limits and the "Small Powers" in SL"!!!". We started talking about banlines, and for some participants these are necessary, when living in high traffic areas and constantly finding strangers in our property, not to say our beds... But some participants defended that banlines are annoying for the limits they impose and in specific situations such as riding a vehicle or when using a big avatar, like a dragon. It was interesting to see that banlines seem to tempt the senses and people feel like camming in and checking the area. Setting limits triggers the need to break them! The feeling of privacy in Second Life is merely an illusion according to some, others defended that privacy is possble, you just need to know how to achieve it. It was mentioned that the (little) privacy some have in SL is the only real privacy they have in any life. So true. Interestingly, someone suggested that those who wish to set banlines should be allowed to do so in specified areas. Security orbs were considered extremely annoying, especially when they eject you from the location without giving you enough time to TP away and/or make you crash. Hate and prejudice often go hand in hand in Second Life as well as anger, jealousy and petty comments and it was defended that RL and SL, in this respect, are very much alike. The group considered that vampires, tinies, children, furries can be easy targets because of their looks. Many thought that looks may determine people's reactions towards others making them a bit more "trigger happy" regarding the eject/ban button. The example of clubes was mentioned; some ban non-human avies on sight. This may have to do with a strong feeling of "power" by club owners, trying to offer a more immersive experience to their guests. RP sims were also mentioned. They have rules and they are often very strict in enforcing them. The group stated that it is important for these sims to have a Landing Point area with clear information, some even offering an Observer's tag to visitors. Another limit discussed was the existence of Adult land which, in reality, does not serve its purpose, since you can and do get exposed to "Adult" content in General and Mature areas as well. Some defended though that in Adult areas there seems to be less griefing, and a smaller number of annoying people! As a conclusion, the moderator stated that humanity has taken many steps towards fighting limiting behaviours and hate, even though we still suffer from it on a daily bases. But it is up to us, in our tolerance to try to grow away from it and know that more than Hate, Love without barriers is what really will make us happy and free!! Last Thursday, LnL's Lounge welcomed a great group for its weekly discussion. This time the topic was "Drama is the core of SL!!!". As drama seems to be everywhere in Second Life, the first step was to try to define what it meant. There were many suggestions, from misunderstandings blown out of proportion, to lack of respect, from the need to "win" over someone else, to a lot of whining. Often other's problems are viewed as less important than one's own and that generates a reaction, usually a drama reaction. Drama is subjective and, as such, it is perceived in different ways. What might be an extreme source of drama for some could be very amusing for others though! Drama seems to be seen generally as something negative, yet some residents find drama a source entertainment. Typical drama generators, according to the discussion group, were age and maturity (or lack of!), relationships/sex, beliefs or griefer-related drama. Another aspect the group discussed was the fact that time and again profiles have sentences like "No drama, please! I just want to have fun!, but also "If you mess with me I will kill you"; in the opinion of the group these ARE triggers for drama! As to the question whether drama originated mostly inworld or offworld (RL stress, venting, being angry/fearful), most thought it did reflect RL's anxieties, although some defended that it depended on the type of drama, often promoted by anonimity. It was interesting to see that some discussers saw drama, in some circumstances, as a positive matter as it could bring people together in response to it, becoming a creative force. Alts could also be both a positive and a negative element depending on the way they were used, either as spying or controlling tools or as a way to avoid identification, and as a result... drama. To the question whether men and women experience drama differently in Second Life, most had witnessed drama from both sides! The biggest difference was related to what each group considered drama. Drama as an empowerment tool, often the case with griefers but not only, was a topic discussed as well. To end the discussion, London asked the group to suggest strategies to cope with drama; here are a few -- keep communication objective and non-judgemental, TP away, mute, ban or file an AR (Abuse Report). Our time was up! To conclude, stressful, annoying, amusing or entertaining, drama will never disappear. Last Thursday's discussion topic was "SL's Classes. What is your position in the social ladder?". London started the discussion by saying that apparently all new residents are equal. They have the same opportunities, they can all own land, a store, or make their dreams come true. As time goes by, though, reality is quite different. There seems to be a certain hierarchy in SL, that determines much of what happens. Some in the group weren't aware of this, they defended that there could be hierarchy within a group, but they were skeptical about this reality existing throughout Second Life. The notion of status seems to influence the way people speak in SL, especially towards those perceived as "important", such as builders, PR people, hunt organisers, land barons or people who were on TV! This perceived "importance" is often reflected from the size of the group they are a member of. Some stated that residents would tend to gravitate towards a repetition of their RL social realities in SL, others that they would avoid them. Status is also earned by education and giving beauty or knowledge for example, or by the amount of time and money people are able to spend inworld, building their contacts' opportunities and their public persona. Another source of status presented was the fact that a place or group is featured in the Destination Guide. Status also seems to be created (and destroyed!) offworld in blogs, and social networks. Regarding the importance tags and titlers have always assumed in SL, the group defended that it happens simply because people CAN wear those titlers or as a roleplaying of their own fantasies, but also as a quick way to show others how you want them to be perceive as. Status is often the feeling or power or worth, sometimes destructive, others helpful and nurturing. When London asked the group if "age" mattered regarding status, the group was divided; some check profiles and are interested in an avatar's longevity while others find that aspect irrelevant. To end on a positive note, time will tell how important the issue of "status" in SL will become. Who was once Big is perhaps now not even in the game anymore, and New Big Fish are just starting to play their role as we speak! Great job, London! Great job, group! Summary of Thursday's discussion on Work in SL!

This Thursday, LnL hosted its weekly discussion on the topic "I feel Useful, I'm going to get a job in Second Life!". London, who was moderating, introduced the topic by stating that in many ways SL is a good place to exercise creativity through work. The group was prompted to start the discussion focusing on the reasons why people decide to get a job in SL. Some stated that it was to get some pocket and rent money, others suggested it was a way to learn new skills and to avoid getting bored! Yet, there are some people, less than when SL was created due to the state of the world's economy, who manage to make a RL living from SL. Many mentioned the fact that it is absolutely fundamental to enjoy what you're doing, otherwise it becomes unbearable to have any sort of job in SL, especially when it is a repetition of what you do in RL. The group mentioned the danger of getting caught in a routine or sacrificing RL. The impact of economies in the way we perceive and approach the possibility of working in SL was also discussed. It was mentioned that working in SL to make a RL living might be difficult as learned skills and gathered experience in SL cannot (will not) be certified and as a result it is practically useless to add it to your curriculum, although it was defended that SL might become more respected in as time goes by. SL could become an important professional tool for people with disabilities, some pointed out. To the topic whether having a job in SL is roleplaying, the group wasn't certain. Some said it was, up to a certain point, yet some didn't see it like that as developing skills in SL could lead to getting a job in RL. An interesting question was raised in the discussion -- how high unemployment numbers were in SL. The group talked a bit about the difficulty residents have in finding a job, especially newbies. But not only newbies face these difficulties. Older residents are often faced with some issues as well, often having to make use of friends' contacts and classified ads. A job in SL has a few disadvantages, like taking time away from RL activities (namely social) and becoming an obssession rather than enjoyment. The way different genders experience SL work was, in the opinion of some, different, yet others defended that it shouldn't be; the only limit should be our own bounderies. One of the last topics to be discussed was the so-called "new" jobs in SL. Before, being a DJ was one of the "hotttest" and best paid jobs. Now other jobs are taking over, for example being a hunt organiser, making a lot of money from sponsorships to their hunts and blogs. Our time was up! So, to conclude, there seems to be a trend in SL regarding work, whether it is to enhance our experience, to kill some time by building things, to grow in our creativity or just to get some money to spend in other people's creations. Everyone agreed that it is a wonderful freedom to have the chance to have a job in SL or not, but because of our work or the work of others, the content the grid has is amazing and it makes our experience very rich! LnL Square gathering people!

One of the greatest things in Second Life is diversity! It enriches our SL experience and the way we live in RL!

When LnL started we called it LnL Square to resonate the idea of it being a gathering place, a place where everyone could meet, like in a town square. We have achieved that goal, both inworld and through the blog!

Thursday, the weekly discussion group met at LnL to discuss the topic “Are we rude or are we RUDE??? – Behaviour in SL”. The topic promised to be an interesting ground for debate and we had a full house! The co-owner of LnL London Junkers, in his new role of moderator of Thursday’s discussions, started by stating that SL(Second Life) was a jungle, no rules whatsoever existed and everyone did whichever they wanted. Most agreed although some said they had not encountered that many rude people. The moderator asked then whether the rules of RL (Real Life) also applied in SL and if they were the same in one world and the other. Some thought they were, others were a bit more skeptical about it. The fact that people in SL come from different cultures also creates a few difficulties in establishing rules applicable to all, though there are the ToS (Terms of Service) which are the “rules” of SL. The fact that SL is in so many ways an illusion, makes it a bit more complex to judge vulgarity as everything is relative and subject to interpretations. The moderator then asked everyone about common rules of conduct in SL and everyone agreed it did depend on personal ethics, perhaps a little less constrained, and in some cases the influence those around us have on us, especially when sim or inworld communities’ rules are concerned. A few rude behaviours were put forward, things like giving away personal information about RL and alts, leaving mics open while only typing or talking in RL, random TPs, pregnancy talkers even. Many thought that these were examples of rudeness as they were an imposition of others’ SL experiences onto you. The group then moved on to discuss anonymity in SL. All agreed that it did open the door to a more “liberal”, to say the least, behaviour as there seem to be no consequences, despite the possibility of filing an AR (Abuse Report) in cases going against the ToS. Finally, the group talked about griefers, the classical example of anti-social behaviour in SL and how to deal with them like TPing away, muting, banning, ejecting. Self-regulation seems to be the key to minimizing this problem. Our time was up, and London concluded the discussion stating that there seemed to be a trend in SL regarding rudeness, whether imported from RL or generated and enhanced in SL, and that it was up to us to change things. Some didn’t agree! But that is the fun of these discussions, different opinions being shared! Join us next week for another discussion, Thursday at 2pm SLT in LnL’s Lounge with a new topic!
